Chemical Reactions
What the clues that a chemical reaction has taken place? In this workshop students will explore three of the most common chemical reactions that occur. (gas, color, heat) This is an engaging workshop that enables students to use science materials to experience chemistry. Geared toward ages 8-12
Mass and Volume
What is mass and volume? This workshop engages students in the process of using balance scales with known gram weights to identify the mass "stuff" inside objects. Then using the water displacement method students will use graduated cylinders to determine the volume of irregularly shaped objects. This workshop is always fun and students enjoy the opportunity to use the equipment to freely experiment and test theories.
Glow Sticks and Thermal energy
What is the effect of thermal energy on glow sticks. Students will experiment with amounts and temperature changes and how those effect glow sticks.
Owl Pellet dissection
How does energy flow through the food chain? How do scientists know what animals eat? In this workshop students will dissect a sanitized owl pellet (owl regurgitation) to find things that the owl ate and cannot digest. (bones, claws, fur, etc.) Each pellet is natural so what is in them will be a mystery. Students will use forceps to pull apart the pellet and match bones to a chart.
Circuits and the flow of electricity
How does electricity flow in a circuit? Using conductive copper tape, a battery, and LED bulbs students will build models of their own circuit to take home. The workshop then allows them to use the knowledge from their paper circuit to build a working circuit with wires, batteries, switches, and a small bulb.
How are rocks formed?
The rock cycle is an on-going process where rocks are changed from one form to another over long periods of time. Students will use various materials to model how rocks change from one form to another.
